How much does it cost to charge an MG ZS EV?
Share
Short answer
A full charge costs about Rs 394 at Rs 7 per unit: 50.3 x 1.12 = 56.3 units at the meter. Per kilometre at home that is around Rs 1.3 to Rs 1.5. Higher-spec variants are reported to accept 11 kW AC, which is worth a three-phase charger only if your home already has three-phase supply.
Cost per charge and per kilometre
At Rs 5 per unit a full charge is about Rs 282; at Rs 7 about Rs 394; at Rs 9 about Rs 507. Most daily top-ups will be half of that or less.
A mid-size SUV like the ZS EV might return about 5.5 to 6 km per kWh in mixed driving. With 12 percent losses that is 0.19 to 0.2 units per km, about Rs 1.3 to Rs 1.45 per km at Rs 7. Petrol SUVs of this size typically cost Rs 7 or more per km.
Charging time depends on your variant
Higher-spec variants are reported to support 11 kW AC — verify yours.
- On 11 kW, three-phase: 50.3 ÷ 11 = 4.6 hours plus losses, roughly 5 to 5.3 hours
- On single-phase 7.4 kW: about 7.5 to 8 hours
Both finish comfortably overnight, which is the point worth remembering before paying for the faster option.
Three-phase is only worth it if you have it
Upgrading a home from single-phase to three-phase involves DISCOM paperwork, a meter change and fees.
If you mostly charge overnight, 7.4 kW single-phase already fills the car in one night. Pay for 11 kW when you will actually use the extra speed — two cars sharing a charger, or short evening turnarounds.
Public DC gets expensive on a big pack
Putting about 53 kWh into the ZS EV at the reported KSEB DC day rate of Rs 19.47 per kWh costs around Rs 1,030; at the reported night rate of Rs 27.41 it is about Rs 1,450.
For a large battery, home charging is where the savings really show — the bigger the pack, the more the per-unit gap compounds.
