How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in India?

Short answer
Take your battery size in kWh, multiply by about 1.12 for AC charging losses, then multiply by your per-unit rate. A 30 kWh car is 30 x 1.12 = 33.6 units from the wall, which is about Rs 235 at Rs 7 per unit. Your tariff matters more than your car: the same charge costs about Rs 168 at Rs 5 and Rs 302 at Rs 9.
The formula, and why it is not just battery size
The battery capacity tells you what the car stores. The electricity meter records a little more, because AC charging loses roughly 10 to 15 percent as heat in the onboard charger, the cable and the battery itself.
So the honest calculation is battery kWh x 1.10 to 1.15 x your rate per unit. Use the higher end if you want a safe estimate. That gap between what the car reports and what the meter reads is normal, not a metering fault.
Your tariff matters more than your car
Home rates across India work out to roughly Rs 5 to Rs 9 per unit effective, depending on state and slab. For the same 33.6 units:
| Rate | Cost of a full 30 kWh charge |
|---|---|
| Rs 5 / unit | about Rs 168 |
| Rs 7 / unit | about Rs 235 |
| Rs 9 / unit | about Rs 302 |
Do not trust a headline tariff. Divide your last bill's energy charges by the units consumed to get your own real number.
You rarely pay for a full charge
Most people plug in somewhere between 20 and 40 percent and stop at 80 or 90 percent, so a typical top-up is half to two thirds of the battery.
For that 30 kWh car, a 30 to 90 percent session is about 18 kWh x 1.12 x Rs 7, which is roughly Rs 141. Monthly spend is a far more useful number to track than cost per charge.
Charger speed does not change the price per unit
A 3.3 kW charger and a 7.4 kW charger deliver the same kWh for the same money. The faster one simply finishes sooner. Efficiency differences between a good wallbox and the portable cable are small next to tariff and slab effects.
What a proper charger adds is safety, scheduling and a meter you can trust — not cheaper electricity.
The slab effect nobody warns you about
An EV can add 150 to 250 units a month. In a slab-based tariff that can push the household into a higher slab, where every unit costs more, not just the EV units.
Before assuming the lowest rate, look at your DISCOM's slab structure and whether a time-of-day tariff is available for your category. A charger with a built-in Class 1 energy meter, like the PowerPod Go 7.4 kW, shows exactly how many units the car is drawing so you can separate the car from the house.

How much does it cost to fully charge an electric car at home?
For a 30 kWh car, about Rs 235 at Rs 7 per unit: 30 kWh x 1.12 for charging losses is 33.6 units at the meter. Larger packs scale proportionally, so a 45 kWh car is about Rs 353 at the same rate.
Why does my meter show more units than the car says it received?
The car reports energy into the battery; the meter counts what left the wall. A 10 to 15 percent difference is normal AC charging loss. A gap much larger than 20 percent is worth investigating.
Does a faster charger cost more to run?
No. Both deliver the same kWh at the same tariff. The faster charger just finishes sooner, which can matter if your DISCOM offers cheaper hours you want to charge within.
