How much does it cost to charge an EV in Kerala?
Share
Short answer
Use the effective per-unit rate from your own KSEB bill, not a headline number. For a 30 kWh car, a full charge is 30 x 1.12 = 33.6 units, which is roughly Rs 168 to Rs 302 across a Rs 5 to Rs 9 range. Two Kerala-specific things matter: the monthly consumption threshold that can re-price your whole bill, and a public tariff that is cheaper during the day than at night.
Start with your bill, not a headline rate
KSEB domestic tariffs are slab based, so your effective per-unit rate depends on how much the household already consumes. A reasonable planning range is Rs 5 to Rs 9 per unit, but the only number that matters is yours.
Divide the energy charges on your last bill by the units consumed. That is your real rate, and it is what you should multiply the 33.6 units by.
Watch the monthly consumption threshold
Kerala households that cross higher monthly consumption levels can move to a costlier billing method, where the whole bill is charged at a higher rate rather than only the extra units.
Adding 150 to 200 EV units a month to a home already using 200 units can do exactly that. Check the current KSEB tariff order and your own bill history before deciding how much to charge at home — this is the single most expensive surprise for new EV owners in Kerala.
What public charging costs, and when
Reported KSEB public rates from May 2025, including 18 percent GST, were roughly:
- AC, 9am to 4pm: about Rs 10.03 per kWh — so 33.6 units is about Rs 337
- AC, night: about Rs 16.79 per kWh
- DC, day: about Rs 19.47 per kWh — roughly Rs 623 for a 32 kWh DC top-up
- DC, night: about Rs 27.41 per kWh, roughly Rs 877
Tariffs change. Treat these as a reported snapshot and confirm the current rate on the KSEB app or website before planning around them.
Kerala's public tariff rewards daytime charging
This surprises people: the night public rate is higher, because evening and night demand is where the grid is stressed.
If you work near a charger, or you have rooftop solar at home, daytime is when Kerala is cheapest. For everyone else, home charging overnight is still the lowest cost by a wide margin — roughly Rs 235 against Rs 337 or more on public AC for the same energy.

What is the KSEB rate for EV charging at home?
There is no separate home EV rate to quote — home charging is billed on your normal domestic slab tariff. Work out your effective rate by dividing your bill's energy charges by units consumed.
Is public charging in Kerala cheaper at night?
No, the reported KSEB public tariff is higher at night than during the day, because evening demand is where the grid is stressed. Confirm current rates before relying on this.
Will an EV push my KSEB bill into a higher slab?
It can. An EV typically adds 150 to 250 units a month, and in Kerala crossing certain monthly thresholds can change how the whole bill is calculated, not just the extra units.
